Transients

As I’ve gotten older I’ve started to ask the question – what can anyone truly own? What is even worth owning and why?

It occurred to me that you could, with some imagination, lay claim to the space + time (space-time) that you occupy at any given moment. Every second of a day, you are the only person exactly where you are, exactly at that time – repetition, impossible. Who else but you could declare “possession”, or ownership?

Shouldn’t your name be registered on some cosmic ledger?

“At this specific moment, this person, uniquely in the universe, was alive at this precise location.”

Cosmic Clerk

And as you travel through time you can look back and say I owned that place, on that day, hour, minute, second, if only for a moment, and the universe recorded my passage – a marker, symbol, memory of a life. Connected, these spacetime markers trace your absolutely unique existence, your journey.

Life is always of-the-moment. What we do with these moments are our butterfly opportunities. Every effect has a cause and aren’t we just cause-generators, after all? Sometimes I think our only purpose as artists (as humans?) is to serve as Nature’s special assistants, helping to increase entropy. Why not document it? A measure of our being.

I want to capture transience. I want to be explicit in my attention to time passing, at a precise location. Why? I believe spacetime represents a whole new palette of “colors” for artistic expression, one that has just barely been tapped.

My goal, here, is to explore this idea, as completely as possible, and share my thoughts and experiments.
